There were two outs and the bases empty in the seventh inning, and the Yankees were being handcuffed by Jon Lester of the Boston Red Sox. They had a major weapon to deploy on their bench, but with a left-hander pitching, some players all but forgot about Jason Giambi.
“With Lester out there, you kind of didn’t think about Jason,” the Yankees’ Alex Rodriguez said. “Give Joe credit for putting him out there.”
Manager Joe Girardi picked precisely the right moment to summon Giambi. After a double by Cody Ransom and a pitching change to another left-hander, Hideki Okajima, Giambi hit for José Molina, and drilled a game-tying homer to center field.
Two innings later, Giambi singled in the winning run off Jonathan Papelbon in a stirring 3-2 victory Thursday afternoon. In the final scheduled game against the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium, Giambi’s hits kept the Yankees breathing in the playoff race.
“You feel like you’ve got an opportunity to not let the ball club go quietly into the night,” Giambi said, adding later, “We’ve got a pulse.”
