Last night I thought it was an A+, today I think a B. It was a powerful speech but lacked a theme and will be low on specific language recall. It framed him as a different type of candidate with a uniquely new-American background, and a fighter who also wants to find the middle, but not strong on words and message. One week from now not many folks will recall what he said and be able to repeat any lines from the speech. My recall is more around (1) “enough,” (2) fighter, (3) unique personal story, (4) wants middle ground on social issues. Which is strange actually from the guy who gave us Yes We Can.
I think I agree, speeches by the Clintons were more memorable--Hillary saying "No way, no how, no McCain"--Bill saying "They want us to reward the past eight years with another four?"-- What I did like about Obama's speech is that he laid it down, specific ideas and specific counters to McSame. They can't keep coming up with the "lack of substance" argument after that. He also made a very clear point that he wasn't attacking McSame's character or patriotism, and made a point of praising his service (both military and politics). There's no way the GOP will return any of that, they'll totally trash Obama as dirty and as personally as they can.
Another highlight was the "It has never been about me, it's about You" (which by the way should have been, "It has never been about me, it's about we" -- more memorable and inclusive.
I actually thought it was well done given the size and scale of it. The weak spot for me was the 20 minutes before and especially the 20 minutes after Obama. After he spoke it was almost like they forgot to plan a really great celebration.
The end was very anticlimactic. There was one thing i really liked after hi speech. It was when he was on stage with his wife, and they had no problem showing affection towards one another. That was real and refreshing to see from a politician. They obviously love each other.
