Are you an avid Google Reader user? We're looking for 20 people who meet that description to help us test a new feature on socialmedian as soon as Thursday August 28th. please identify yourself by adding a comment here.
Alright folks, thanks for all the interest. Will send along details asap on Thursday. (Note: we can take a few more people if others want to take part, just not too many yet).
Ok everyone, thanks for all the interest on this one. We are ready to get rolling with the test. Here's the deal.
One of the biggest requests from users since our going beta has been to tightly integrate socialmedian more with the services our users already regularly use. Related, you have asked us to make it really simple to get your content into socialmedian.
Top of the list of services you've asked us to work with is Google Reader. You can already add your socialmedian RSS feeds into Google Reader so that you can read socialmedian in Google Reader, NOW we are going to enable you to easily share/clip any story from Google Reader into socialmedian. The front end for this wont be ready until next week but the back end is ready now to test. All we need from you is for you to post your public Google Reader url here and we will link your Google Reader to socialmedian. Then, from Google Reader, all you need to do is click "share" on any story and we'll automatically clip that story to your socialmedian page. Tomorrow we'll also enable you to share with a note from Google Reader, and your note will appear as a comment on socialmedian.
To participate: post your public Google Reader URL here and we'll hard-wire today whomever posts such public G-R URL by noon eastern time today. If you post your public G-R URL after noon today, we'll get you up and running tomorrow on this.
Then, please pass along feedback as to how you think it's working or not working. Again, we'll have the front-end UI working next week so have some patience with that please.
Ah, good question Michael. We'll post it to your socialmedian page, which automatically makes it available to your followers, and automagically shares it with the relevant news networks you belong to. You can then also manually share to other networks on socialmedian that you are a member of.
Michael - a thought would be that for power users like yourself, we enable you to connect a modified version of your socialmedian feed to FF, e.g. just your on-socialmedian activities, not your shares in from other services.
Jason - I recognize that this part of the conversation belongs to you and Michael but, please clarify for us your concerns about Michael's being over-connected. From the networks I share with him his networks seem moderate. I know that you're swamped this morning but, when you get a moment, let us know how network size affects the Google Reader/Social Median project?
Strange, I used my new FriendFeed badge on my blog to get that URL rather than trying to dig it out of google. Hooray for interconnected web apps I guess.
Hey Vincent. What Michael and I are referring to is solving the round-trip duplication issues. Which we will work on for sure. An example is as follows. If Michael has his Google Reader shares connected to his FriendFeed, and then all has his Google Reader shares connected to his socialmedian, and then also has his socialmedian shares connected to his friendfeed. The share from google reader would thus hit directly to friendfeed, directly to socialmedian, and then a duplicate item from socialmedian to friendfeed. Now I call michael a rare case because few people have already connected their socialmedian feed to their friendfeed. A way we can solve this is by only sharing certain types of your socialmedian content with friendfeed vs. all. In terms of any worry about sending too much content to socialmedian, we're not worried about that at all right now. share to socialmedian as you wish and in plentiful amounts!
Thanks for the clarification, Jason. And at your request, I hope to do lots (& lots & lots) of sharing via SocialMedian in the not-too-distant future...
http://www.google.com/reader/shared/16245915598121632586 - anyone else interested in subscribing to my reader...? - I'll subscribe to yours in return. I like to play more with how Google reader is influencing rankings and authority to blogs, RSS feeds, etc.
We have now hard-wired Google Reader share to socialmedian for: Mjays, VincentWright, michaelfidler, fixator, ferringer, marchino, ukstevieb, greghollingsworth, DanielJPritchett, gondoi, JonathanGoodman, brekatann, Gabriela, matthewSBOC, antoine_bertier, lesly, davidthomas8779, louisgray. Anything you share from google reader will automatically get added to your page/clips on socialmedian. We'll get to the rest tomorrow. REMINDERS: (1) We are still working on the front-end display for this, (2) We wont have the ability for you to edit settings on this until next week. Please pass along feedback! Looks like Louis Gray likes to share!
This is just an idea, but is it possible to turn a note from Google Reader into a comment on the item in S|M? Right now it looks like any notes I add to an item aren't coming through into my S|M page.
Everyone on this list who added their google reader url prior to this comment has now been enabled. Now, everything you "share" from google reader will be added to your socialmedian automatically, and we'll then share it with your relevant news networks automagically. Please pass feedback to us as you try this out. It should all be working fine. We'll have the front-end up mid next week so you can adjust settings, etc.
