For a number of England's so-called golden generation, convincing Fabio Capello of their credentials for a ticket to South Africa is more about fitness than flair. He needs no persuading about what Rio Ferdinand, Michael Owen or Joe Cole is capable of on a football pitch but he is adamant that, if they are not in top physical condition, then they stay at home next summer.
This is a particular worry for Ferdinand, whom Capello wants as an absolute certainty for the World Cup provided his physical condition is right.
