Norwegian striker John Carew had a hand in three goals and scored one as Aston Villa claimed their biggest win of the season against a Bolton team who succeeded only in strengthening their credentials as relegation candidates.
Villa's other goals came form Ashley Young, Gabriel Agbonlahor, James Milner and Carlos Cuellar, with Johan Elmander sneaking paltry consolation for Bolton.
Villa began the day eight places above Gary Megson's men, but the fact they had scored only one goal more than their visitors backed up critics who claim they will not infiltrate the top four because they are, essentially, a counter-attacking force, who lack the creativity to regularly cut open well-drilled defences.
Bolton appeared to bank on that assessment being true as they began with a conservative five-man midfield screening their back four. Their plan for scrounging a point may have been sound, but the execution was fatally flawed – within five minutes, lackadaisical defending allowed Villa to take the lead.
