Toronto's Sharon Fichman played a $25,000 tournament in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and upset No. 2 seed Alexandra Mueller in the first round (6-3 in the third set). She won another three-setter in the second round before losing to No. 8 seed Sacha Jones of New Zealand in the quarter-finals. In doubles, she and Anna Tatashvili of Georgia via Florida are the top seeds; they survived an 11-9 supertiebreaker in the first round then strolled to the final, where they'll face unseeded Americans Lauren ALBANESE and Jamie HAMPTON.
