The Tenori-On remains one of the most eye-catching, hypnotizing ways to make music, and Yamaha has a cheaper model coming in January. Problem is, it'll actually cost the same as the superior original does now. Confusing? Let me explain:
The original (Tenori-On W) was $1200 when it arrived last year, but the official U.S. distributor has since dropped it down to $1000. You even get a free 2GB SD card. The new Tenori-On O (for orange) will also be $1000, but unlike the original: won't run on batteries, has a plastic casing, and the 16 x 16 grid of LED-lights only show on one side. Basically, it's intended for the home studio versus performance. All those limitations for the same price? No thanks. Not unless that recommended price turns out to be $800 by the time stores discount it.
The original Tenori-On W is getting an OS update in January, and weirdly, it looks like Yamaha is increasing it's MSRP to $1500. Maybe it's the Yen to Dollar conversion, I don't know. But I don't see the the benefit of waiting until January for either when the original costs $1000
