The tall (for the time), big server won the French Open doubles
title with Dennis Ralston in 1966, beating the mercurial Ion Tiriac and
Ilie Nastase in the final. And he got to the final of the U.S. Open in
1967 in singles, losing to Aussie John Newcombe. A semi-finalist at
Wimbledon in 1968, he and Arthur Ashe also led the U.S. to the Davis
Cup title that year. Graebner was on the Davis Cup team from 1963 to
1970.
He also wrote a book about mixed doubles with his wife, Carole
(Caldwell) Graebner, who was a top player in the U.S. but wrapped
things up early, when they had kids.
Surprisingly, he only played the Australian and French Opens one
time each, over a Grand Slam career that spanned fro 1960 to 1980.
