Summary

Keith J. Winstein reports on services for Sen. Edward Kennedy.

At the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library, mourners lined up to sign guest books and walk every so slowly by the flag-draped casket of Sen. Edward Kennedy. A military guard stood at attention in the caverous room with panoramic views of Boston Harbor.

The mood has been somber, unhurried. Inside, members of the Kennedy family greeted the first visitors. The receiving line included Victoria Kennedy, the senator’s widow, Joseph Kennedy II, the senator’s nephew, Robert Kennedy Jr., Caroline Kennedy, daughter of the late president, and Ethel Kennedy, the widow of Robert F. Kennedy.

“Thank you so much for coming,” the Kennedys told each visitor. One greeted Victoria Kennedy with some gentle prodding: “Hello. You should run!” Kennedy laughed, waving her arm as if to bat away the suggestion.

Later, the Kennedys left the library to shake hands with those waiting to pay their respects. They were mobbed, especially Caroline Kennedy.
