I have spent a lot of time searching for examples of sci-fi and fantasy fiction in which the protagonists displays the characteristics usually seen in antagonists. I do not mean the "anti-hero" who still ends up fighting for "good." I mean someone with a decidedly evil persuasion.
Picture the classic dark sorcerer, mad scientist, or evil warlord bent on world/galactic domination that are so common as the "bad guys" in virtually all sci-fi and fantasy stories. Now, place that character as the main, central character with the story told from his point of view.
Does an example of this exist or even something close to it? I have read so much fiction in which the "good guys" win that it is not worth reading anymore. It is all just so predictable.
The closest things I have ever seen to this are Drew Karpshyhn's Darth Bane series (which are pretty good examples of what I am talking about), and Karl Edward Wagner's Kane stories (which I have not read and are very difficult to find).
It seems that this is an entirely open genre, and I am hungry for more!
