Basin Electric Power Cooperative was awarded $100 million in stimulus money Wednesday for clean coal projects.
U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu visited Bismarck State College to announce the funds with Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., and Gov. John Hoeven.
"The world is not going to turn its back on coal," Chu said, noting that North Dakota gets 90 percent of its electricity from coal.
Nationwide, 50 percent of electricity is coal-based.
"We have to find a way to clean up that resource as best as we can," Conrad said.
Basin's projects will capture carbon emissions from coal-based power plants and inject that carbon dioxide into the ground to create more energy sources.
