Not so long ago I was talking with the responsible of the channel partner program of Youtube. This is a division of Youtube, dedicated to create close ties with good content providers.
What impressed me at that time is that I learned that only 3% of people watching Youtube are active participants, all the others are just passive consumers.
Yesterday I stumbled upon an article in BBC website "Twitter hype punctured by study" , which in brief was saying exactly the same, only 10% of Twitter users generates 90% of traffic, all the others are passive users, with most of the people Tweeting just once every 74 days. Even worst 60% of people trying Twitter never come back.
The similarity of the 2 models is striking; we are assisting at a new phenomenon of broadcasting, few producers, and massive audience.
Of course the difference with the past is that anybody, with a bit of knowledge, can become a small BBC or Reuters, but essentially very few people do.
