I have been using Twitter since Nov 08 so not very long. There has been and still is a huge learning curve. Everyday brings new followers and new ideas. There is always a new app to try and one to undo.
In just the past few days Mike Dillard decided to unfollow those he doesn't know. Randy Gage spent a good deal of time on his teleseminar a few weeks ago expressing his version of Twitter etiquette. John Milton Fogg expressed his concerns with Web 2.0 on his blog this afternoon. All in All there doesn't seem to be a cohesive agreement on how Twitter should be used.
Should we follow those that follow us then who should do the following first? Did the chicken come before the egg or the egg before the chicken? Should we only follow those we know from somewhere else ie Facebook, BetterNetworker.com, Direct Matches, our Businesses? Should we only follow the established Gurus? Should we only follow friends and family?

if twitter were an octopus, I as tweeter would be sat on it's head while it's arms dipped into a range of social networks I belong to - widgets and apps would be placed along the legs, hellotxt and ping.fm would be near the head, profilactic and friend feed would be like nerve clusters or hotspots to strengthen signal to limbs.
I think it really depends on what we want to achieve. Follow and follower are a bit feels like social networking. Further social networking is likely a tool for everyone nowadays
