Officials at Boston College have made what may be a momentous decision: they've stopped doling out new email accounts to incoming students. The officials realized that the students already had established digital identities by the time they entered college, so the new email addresses were just not being utilized. The colleg (Read More)
: Interesting. I know here at my school many professors do not see your questions/concerns through email as legit unless they are sent through a school source (school e-mail); they are afraid they are spam. Most young kids create immature and embarrassing e-mail names ("stud", "hot", "baby"). In this case, they (probably) will create a new one when they start college if the school doesn't give them one. I know Google runs our school e-mail now and it great. I just can't imagine eliminating the school e-mail addresses altogether verification reasons.
: @danielpatricio That's exactly what I see. I don't think I could go without mine for many reasons-profs, college recruiting, etc. But that's my opinion. I don't see that the e-mail that you make when you are 13, 14, or 15 will suit you well as a college student/maturing adult.

: This tragedy is emblematic of extreme anxiety and depression that many in our nation, indeed, the world are feeling due to stresses beyond their control. While we are all vulnerable, these stresses (climate change, global economic meltdown, war, media sensationalism) are particularly hard on youth, who have little life experience to guide them. Many feel alone and outcast, may not have parental or other elders or peers to turn to. In these difficult times, which are likely to only get worse, it is critical that wisdom, kindness and compassion be extended by all of us whenever we have the opportunity--both in RW and online. While the boy was ultimately responsible for his actions, regardless of whether this tragedy was avoidable, there was no excuse for not making an effort to prevent it, much less encouraging it. Shame on those who did encourage him, and shame on those who did nothing. As the great Hillel once said, "If I am not for myself, who will be for me? But if I am ONLY for myself, WHAT am I...?" and the original golden rule, "That which is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow. That is the whole Bible, the rest is explanation; now go and learn."

: No, it implies that they are a bully, as in someone who leverages a favorable imbalance in power dynamics to pursue their agendas unimpeded. This is an historical fact: America has used its economic and military power to push other nations around, and has in fact glorified in it. And I would not say that anyone is a "force for good". This isn't a comic book. The whole notion of nations being a "force" for anything other than maintaining their own nationhood is part of where the bullying starts.
