Right now, much of traditional media doesn’t care about internet media. They don’t see it as a money making medium and compared to movies in particular, it isn’t yet. Frankly, I think it’s because advertisers put too much stake in click throughs and not enough in branding, which is why they buy ads on TV. They also don’t appreciate that the majority of journalists have admitted to taking stories from blogs so it is important to appeal to the early adopters who blog.
It is imperative that celebrities use online media to manage their reputations…period. Say disaster strikes. A budding new actor who happens to be married is snapped in a photo with a cute blond. The photo is broadcast on TMZ and in the Star the next day. With social media, celebrities can speak directly to the public and say, “Hold on there, she was my wife’s interior decorator”. @michaelfidler thank you, Michelle makes an excellent point about humanizing personalities. It's a great way to energize one's fan base and take control of your public image.
@zionaetzion traditional media is paying more attention than you might think. Just look at Hulu. Hell, even CBS has produced some killer web series (see ClarkandMichael.com).
But the problem is that THEY are traditional media. They are simply trying to sell you something. The thing is that we have to pass traditional media entirely to where you are getting the news from people that just want to tell you their side, their opinion, and not trying to make money off of it.
Yes, by clearing up a picture or an article, they will make money because they will improve their image. But the fact is that they aren't getting money from telling you the truth. When people are selling you knowledge, they want to make the knowledge good enough to buy. That is where traditional media fails. By making the news look a certain way, and filtering stuff to only produce more sales
@chacha102 I disagree. Social media exists for so much more than just making a buck or reputation management. Artists are realizing they can use these tools to energize their fan base.
@sarahcrisman I know. What I was saying is that its not worth anything if CNN or any other traditional media joins social networks because all they are trying to do is make a buck. I was replying to your prior comment about CBS and stuff paying more attention to social media.
