We launched a new feature today on socialmedian, "News Flash" -- it will be fun to see where this one goes and how it develops based on user feedback.
Disclosure: We're pretty darn excited about this one!
The foundation for the News Flash feature came from user requests to make it more meaningful to be a Newsmaker on socialmedian. Newmakers wanted better ways to alert their followers to hot stories and breaking news. We also had several users ask us if they could create flashy alternative headlines for hot stories, similar to say how Matt Drudge does on the DrudgeReport.
socialmedian is all about getting the news, filtered by your network. News Flash makes that even more possible.
socialmedian's new News Flash feature enables any user to create a News Flash on a story and broadcast it to their network. When creating a News Flash, you can create a new headline for the story.
News Flash 1.png In the example here you see I'm writing a News Flash with the headline "Clamp The Show On The Other Foot: Put The SEC on Trial"
When I go to "share this story" on Twitter after creating a News Flash, the original headline appears in the box. Is there a way to make the News Flash title appear for easier sharing?
@jasongoldberg I haven't played with it much yet, but the ticker at the top should not switch if the mouse is hovering over it. The idea being, I am still reading the headline and I may want to click it. Otherwise, it is a very nice addition.
@jasongoldberg great feature - thanks, liking it a lot. Have been thinking for a while it would also be nice to single click "clip and tweet". Maybe there is a way in our profile to configure the clip button per user? We are nearly there with the News Flash
@jasongoldberg I should add, the same for the Mood feature, if we like/dislike - would be nice to autotweet these too. Maybe even display a list of the 'moodiest' folks on S|M - lol.
Very nice feature!!! But it would be very convenient if the headline stays when the title is hovered. Another solution could be a back button to move back if you missed the headline, or by letting the news flash to scroll vertically, showing the previous headline.
@jasongoldberg Two new comments on this 1: Is there a way in which you can view all the headlines, I missed one earlier and had to wait for it to cycle again, so maybe a link to display current newsflashes? 2: When i wish to broadcast a headline, and wish to edit the headline - I (personally) would rather have the headline there to edit rather than retype something from scratch. would be interested in others opinions on this. Finally, why does it look different for non users vs logged in users? Cheers Nige.
