Google finally launched its photo software, Picasa, for the Mac yesterday. It offered a nice alternative to Apple’s iPhoto with some features, namely syncing with a good online photo service, Picasa Web Albums. Of course, that was launched one day before the Apple keynote at Macworld. Today, Apple responded with iPhoto ‘09, which looks like it will blow the new Picasa out of the water.
While none of us have tried it yet, Phil Schiller’s demonstration on the stage looked really great. By far the most powerful new feature to me is the ability to tag faces. And using face detection technology, Apple can actually find the same person in other pictures. It likely won’t work perfect, but Schiller’s demo looked very, very good.
Even more powerful is that you can tag people in photos and sync them with Facebook. To me, that has always been the real powerful feature of Facebook’s photo service. And now that it can sync — yes sync both ways — with iPhoto, it’s even more powerful.
Another big addition to iPhoto is geotagging photos. This is my favorite feature of another p
@billso I really like Flickr, too. But the latest additions to Picasa Web are quite impressive. Picasa (the native app) is not as cool as iPhoto. But in my opinion Flickr has a hard time with the massive Google investment into Picasa Web. We will see.
I'm happy as a Flickr Pro account owner that Flickr integration came up first.
even if iPhoto is better, the majority of PC's/laptops is not Apple. Therefore google has a good chance of "winning" this, especially because of the nice web integration features, being able to use local suppliers to print your photo's etcetera. But if i can afford an apple laptop i will use iPhoto ;-)
