By now you have probably seen the news from last Friday that socialmedian is being acquired by the business networking site, XING, and that I'll be moving to Hamburg to help drive some of XING's key product initiatives in 2009.
So, what does that mean for socialmedian in 2009?
The short answer is: More and Better.
socialmedian users should expect us to continue to enhance the socialmedian service and to follow the same model in 2009 that was at our core in 2008, namely: Engage with our users and build the service with them.
So, what do you want us to do first in 2009? What features would you most like to see?
Add your thoughts to the comments here and I promise you that we will build the features you ask for.
I have asked for better/easier filtering before and that would include search capabilities. For my own purposes, I want an API so that I can get the information for a specific story url. Not sure if many people would want that though.
As i said before and @Robdiana agrees better filtering. Don't get me wrong having networks and the current filtering is great but i could do with more filtering. But i think this should be on a user level options like facebook to show more or less, filter by tags etc.
An API would be great.
I would like to see widgets for websites too with options like show hot stories or being able to choose a network or even a single newsmaker.
I don't really get the like/dislike option and i have not really noticed it being used. I thought that by clipping a story you are saying you like it and bring it to others attention.
1. When I log in I have to View > Full Screen. Because the final click on the log in box appears below my status bar at the bottom of my screen (and I have my task bar at the top of my screen). Okay, maybe it's just me. I'm always wrong right.
2. I would still like Don JGo to appear on The Recruiting Animal Show but only if it suits him. (And I noticed that Chris Anderson unfollowed me on Twitter so if I have to go to him first I might be in for a hard time).
I'm looking forward for an open API to access my posts, the posts of my newsmakerers and networks as well as all clips and comments. Give the developers something to play with and you will be surprised what they will do with it.
Oh and the About Me links on my profile page shoud hava an rel="me" attribute to support the XFN Standard. You use the google social graph api to import profiles, but when I enter my socialmedian profile in http://socialgraph-resources.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/samples/findyours.html it does not show all my imported sites.
And I like to access the newsmakers social network as a FOAF file for each user. That would be great.
I'm looking forward to a WHITE LABLE to deploy my own Social Network; e.g. Google Custom Search Engine (CSE). Using a relevant Domain name, I want to guide people to the most important news and general information they need to know about the Dominican Republic.
I like diigo's Send to Blog feature but hate the default layout which can't be changed. I'd rather use socialmedian. the link back to social median could start conversations which could then be integrated in the blog's comment section like friendfeed conversations are via discus. Wordpress plugin maybe?
Definitely an open API. I can see some great projects created if it existed. Air apps, blog widgets, and more. I think that would be number one for me.
Jason; The Ingenesist Project specifies 3 web applications which if developed and applied to social networks would enable knowledge to become tangible outside the construct of the traditional corporation and inside social media. The concept of making knowledge tangible is very important but we're not there yet. Please keep this in mind when developing new products and services - a huge new paradigm is awaits for companies such as XING and SM. Thanks, Dan http://www.ingenesist.com
@jasongoldberg The iPhone App is #1 for me in the low-hanging fruit category. Surprisingly, I found I was using Strands a lot more following the release of their app as it is so readily available.
Ease of use. The single feedback I get from everyone I recommended the service to is that it is very tough to use. Too many overlapping points of entry. You should probably have a layered approach to interaction like, newbie, average and pro.
iPhone optimized page, or an iPhone app is #1 for me. Beef up search would be #2. #3 would be some sort of hide feature (FF's implementation is great). if i don't want to see a story, i want to hide it from view...
@chipro Think of a snip (short for snippet) as an easy way to add a quick thought to socialmedian. All you have to do is add it to your socialmedian page and it automatically gets shared with your followers. You can also share it specifically with a particular topical news network.
** Keep working on the UI ** Esp. Target New users, ease of entrance.
- Simple things, Colour Coding the "post-it note" eg. red = clipped. green = Unclipped - Check Box to "Show Only UnClipped News" Check Box to "Show only Clipped News" - Check Box to: "Clip all Unclipped News" - Handy if you feel your News Aggregation is very accurate and producing copious amounts of News Feeds.
Add RSS Feeds to each network. Each Network could then be used as a feed for content.
** Live context analysis ** - While viewing another persons S|M home, or one of their Networks, "Post-it Note" could turn Yellow if the context is related to one of your network topics. (Network & Topic would be flagged also) - Also choice to add some one's News Network to one of your Networks. Essentially adding Another person's SOURCES to your News Network SOURCES that do not overlap.
All: An easy filter for users to be able to filter out stories they've already clipped -- if we can't launch that within 3 weeks time, you should fire me.
@jasongoldberg iPhone app UI customization search function It would be great to have the option to click through to full story/post from clipped stories instead of having to go through two or three pages.
These would be the features I would find most useful. Keep up the good work & happy holidays.
@jasongoldberg mobileapps multiplatform embed our own audio/video's from any source new rating category (assists)first person to clip an article after it has been submitted. limit to the number of imported stories per day, or week. Keep people from dumping their entire reader here. I'm guilty of this! The sites starting to grow and it will give more people a chance to be noticed. This is the same reason as the "assist" mentioned above. It might help to get people more involved. An app to solve all our problems! Too Utopian? I thought I would try to give you something more challenging(your making it look too easy :-)
A few have mentioned variants above, but I would love to see an ability to create a private news network for groups of friends/colleagues. Essentially, right now I have about 10-15 close friends that are now spread across the country that I stayed in contact with that love to share links, stories, and videos in Pownce... and as you can imagine, that group connection has been severed, despite attempts to use other copy-cats. Do I want a replacement for Pownce? No. I want something better!
@jasongoldberg I forgot you were doing something in flash. Still a bit vague, but I'm looking forward to it . There's some great suggestions on this thread, more constuctive than last time. Search is gioing to be an major addition here. Also you mention the ability to link stories together based on relevance, I hope that's in the works as well! Finnally, the idea was floating around about creating customized pages, alsmost like our own site, yet pulling the content from our networks. Is that something you are still considering?
Keep it fast, and quick loading, don't let it get laden with graphics, and also if you can create a side navigation bar, or some secondary context menu, so that it's easier to find your way through all the different news panes.. Especially to help newbies get comfortable finding and locating information.
@jasongoldberg O.K. I mentioned a new category of recognition, and you mentioned several weeks back of making the role of newsmaker more relevant. Whenever someone submits a story, which is then clipped by one of their newsmakers, a news flash is generated. This news flash may be something only seen on the site, or it could generate a tweet sent off the site! Am I getting warm?
@jasongoldberg sorry for the delay--I took a bit of a "digital holiday" Here are my top 3:
1) Save me from myself and my friends! I can't count how many "social networks" I am a part of. SM, Twitter, FF, Facebook are the biggies. So, when I see a story that is interesting--where should I comment--on the blog, FF, SM? Why not replace native comment engines, Disqus or Intense Debate via a Wordpress and MT plugin, and via APIs for other platforms. 2) iphone app (already requested by @louisgray and others. 3) Facebook Connect/More Facebook integration. Let's face it 120M Facebookers can't be wrong. If you want to continue to grow, you have to hunt where potential users are spending time. For many of them, it is on FB.
@jasongoldberg I was actually going to send you an email, but I thought I should let you get settled in first. Honestly, I don't like it. I find it difficult to know what the story I'm clipping is about. Whenever I see one, I assume the title has been altered. It a also make the site less serious. It seems like it's unnecessary. I think it's salvageable, but some changes should be made. Sorry to have to tell you this, but I'm no help if I don't tell the truth.
@michaelfidler Thanks for the honest feedback! The idea was to enable people to write flashy headlines ala how drudgereport does. We haven't put the user-gen headlines on the smToday page as we wanted to get more feedback first. We'll tweak this more.
less US more International...India, the Arab World,,,South Asia...It's not go West young man....it's go East now that the US is just a paper tiger bailed out by China & Arabs...:)
@marsreport Question for you: If we dropped new users on the "smtoday" tab instead of the guided setup that we do today on "my networks" -- do you think that would help? Not an overall solution but a start?
We're always looking to make this better and REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR FEEDBACK!
