Given the spotty nature of AT&T’s 3G Network I have often found myself switching on my Apple iPhone’s WiFi connection, signing up to one of the hot-spots (using Devicescape’s Easy Wi-Fi iPhone Client) to send emails, surf the web and of course make cheap phone calls using the Truphone client. Apparently, I am not the only one — people love WiFi-based Internet access on their phones, according to a recent report by San Mateo, Calif.-based mobile advertising company, Admob.
They say that in November, about 8 percent of total requests were coming from WiFi networks, versus 3 percent in August. No surprise, 42 percent of iPhone requests are made from WiFi, notably higher than most other WiFi capable phones which average between 10-20 percent. I think that is because AT&T’s 3G service has the unpredictability of Lindsay Lohan’s mood that we instead opt for WiFi. It is good that AT&T splurged on Wayport, a WiFi service provider and saved us a whole lot of waiting. In UK, Nokia’s N Series are pretty popular behind iPhone and iPod Touch, the Nokia N95 and other N se
@bwana I'm looking forward to the day when we don't have to decide between network options for speed. Hopefully all the options will be fast! I'll post an interesting link regarding a new network being rolled out in England when I find it. There claiming speeds up to 50Mbs. Sounds good to me!
@iphonegirl That's a good question and a puzzling one. It's just as puzzling as the decision to not include firewire on Macs new laptops. The added expense is minimal, and the demand is huge. It makes me always wonder if these type of decisions are part of a larger plan, we just haven't seen yet! Maybe, it's just poor decision making. Who knows!
I have an N95 and I find myself choosing to use the web on my mobile rather than laptop nowadays. With mobile versions of the main sites and my email on the handset it seems a waste to load up the laptop every time.
www.getmobster.com - launching early 2009 - using MoiP - Dial tone on your mobile - talk is cheap - UK to USA will be 2p per minute pay as you go - no contract any phone any network.
@michaelfidler I'm not sure as I haven't used any of the newer Nokias yet. However, I can definitely state the N95 is better than a Nokia Slide (6510). In comparison to the iPhone which my colleague has in the office I would still choose the N95 too.
