Tweetdeck - the Adobe Air application which has taken Twitter addicts to a new state of nirvana - is due to be updated this week, and UK-based developer Iain Dodswoth emailed me with the new version.
It will appear at v0.20 and is quite different from the previous one. Now, Tweets are no longer stored for long periods as they were before. Dodsworth says the reason is that the sheer volume of tweets (his TweetDeck was storing 10,000 per day) was having a huge impact on the speed and reliability of TweetDeck. Now when, you start up TweetDeck, it will initially be empty and then all the columns will be populated from the live API data within a second or two.
The advantages are myriad. The maximum number of tweets per Twitter call has been increased from 20 to 200 - theoretically you can now get 200 tweets every 36 seconds in your All Tweets column. Twitter searches have also been increased, from 20 tweets to the maximum of 100 tweets per minute. The startup of TweetDeck is much improved. Column actions such as adding, moving or deleting columns are much faster (t
I really want to try both Tweetdeck and Twhirl, but am very averse to AIR since some bad experiences in the beta and early 1.0 days. I much prefer native (Mac) clients.
@Thomaspower I use it in the same way I guess many people do - it allows me to put people into different groups / columns - so for example some people I follow for social reasons, some are industry experts and some are in a kind of 'holding' column which is people that look interesting but I haven't decided whether to carry on following them yet. Then there's the column that refreshes every so often and has a search for my name in it to see if people are talking about me ;)
I have a column for a Tweetake.com search too - the Twitter backup service I own along with @alfaguru
A DM column makes sure that I don't miss a DM - I like the fact that twitter emails me my DMs, but it's a pain that i can't reply to them by replying to the email.
From Tweetdeck I can shorten a URL via various services, post a 12 second video (although I never do) and post Twitpics.
The Twitscoop button allows me to see trends.
Tweetdeck basically allows me to organise my Twitter 'life' - I think the reason that a lot of people don't 'get' Twitter is because they're trying to make it work for them by only using the website - if you follow people who tweet a lot then that's quite difficult. (Not everyone grew up with IRC and non threaded chat rooms!)
@kenleyneufeld Yes, multiple account support would be nice.
We run accounts for various clients and so we also run twhirl and twitterfox on various PCs in the office but I always use Tweetdeck for my own account.
Next achievable aspect of our lives should be an ability ,like in star trek , bio dissolution at one place and re bio assembling with instantaneous appearance in far away places.Nothing is impossible AATHREYA - Dr . Bala krishna Murthy Ramaraju
@NikkiPilington I thought I was using TweetDeck to its fullest. Thanks for detailing how you use it. TD is the best twitter client available. Great work, @IainDodsworth
