I was so excited when I heard they'd be doin' this, and the outcome was pretty good too. I'm wondering though, did they make her glow blue on purpose? I've seen a few other holograms using the same technology and they've never been blue. :/
@dannytatom They did make her glow on purpose, and I believe they are planing on using it cool. I give CNN a lot of credit for the way they have embraced experimenting with new technology lately.
@mmdmurphy Anyone have a name for this thing? Something clever. I can think of a ton of names that work if I didn't like it, but haven't come up with an appropriate one yet for someone who likes it.
The guy in the studio couldn't see her, so not a "hologram" at all. It's just a special effect that only the TV audience saw. Cool to have what amounts to 3D filming, but it's hardly a Hologram as I expect the term to be used.
@michaelrose Thanks a lot for the actual name. I knew it wasn't an actual hologram(How cool would that be!), but its nice to now the actual name for the technique.
@michaelrose Thanks from me also. I am disappointed that they tried to add a "Golly Gee" factor by calling it holography instead of tomography. Misleading/misrepresentation at best.
Honestly, I thought it was a little ridiculous. What real benefit did it bring to their coverage? Honestly, I think just going to her live from wherever she was would have been more effective.
@greghollingsworth I agree, it wasn't worthy of a serious news site. It did get them a lot of publicity. However, I'm sure the circumstances of the night were the only factor leading to their high viewership, not the "tomography".
@michaelfidler I would agree, I don't think the "holographic" reporter brought people to CNN, although I'm sure the video on the website has gotten lots of views. That's how I saw it.
Ohh such a hard thing doing blue screen work. though I think it was more impressive when they started putting the holograms on football fields. This is already old news
Nobody in the comments made the Star Wars Princess Leia joke? C'mon, are we all that serious on socialmedian? The moment I saw this useless thing, I tweeted "Help me, Wolf Blitzer, you're my only hope."
I was completely captivated by the hologram and couldn't believe this technology, which I first saw in Star Trek YEARS ago, is now actually real! Here is a clip of Will.i.Am, who appeared as a hologram as well (starts at 0:39): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=deoOTqT-SMI. Can't wait to see who else will be using this technology and what comes next!
