If you read the article Twitter is not exactly "taking the lead" or even adopting or supporting OMB standards. They're just saying maybe someday. That's not enough.
I think I'm confident in Twitter's ability to adjust to the market for microblogging. It'll be interesting to see how quickly these other microblogging sites grow.
I think it might be a little to late for Twitter to take the lead with the Open Microblogging standard. If they did this earlier this year then I would say they would own this market.
@leolaporte You know what Leo, I lost my hope on Twitter. And even if they would implement full OMB standards, a bunch of people like yourself would've already moved on to other open source microblogs! Putting it simple, Twitter will (in the best case) adopt and implement the OMB standards when they realize their own downfall versus the rise (and shine) of open source microblogs...
I wonder if Twitter can remain the playground for new users entering this arena? While most will stay on the superficial Twitter blurt "read my blog" level, others will move on to laconica, openmicroblogger or yammer, with the advantages mentioned in so many places already such as real community around a microforum, as @leolaporte has done
If you happen to be the 800 lb gorilla, I guess you get to make up the rules. Even though alternatives to Twitter sound interesting, I keep getting sucked back into the mothership. I would be very interested to see what organization of service has the clout to make Twitter be a better net citizen. I don't see it coming any time soon.
