Summary
I call on all Obama supporters to consider immediately wearing clothes of mourning... a black arm band or a black shirt or some other article of black clothing - in a peaceful protest... not only against the feeling that the election has been or is being stolen...

But in protest that in the year 2008 - when Technology is so advanced - that there even still exist ways that the election can be stolen Read the full article

How about a call to action! "November 4th, 2008 a date that will live in infamy - the constitution was suddenly and deliberately attacked through lies and deceptions." Shout it, blog it, twitter it and podcast it. The blogosphere is mightier then the sword! You, sir, are mightier then the sword! Mourning is for the dead. Democracy isn't dying on my watch. (Sorry I have been watching a little too much Keith Olbermann.)

Stealing the election, I have voted and I saw many other early voters voting as well. Remember this the US tends to be a bit lazy. If you want Obama then get yourself out there and vote for him if you assume he is gonna win... well then you know what assume breaks down as.

I don't like the tone of the article that election is only stolen if Obama loses. It also lumps dirty politics with cheating, the former being bad taste, the later being illegal. Lets all just hope its fair.

More importantly, try to remember if your guy loses, it doesn't mean it was stolen. After the election, everyone needs to come together.

If it is stolen, I think that there had better be some major civil disobedience in this country. In looking at all of the state polls, there really is no way that Obama can lose this election at this point. It simply doesn't add up. So, if he loses, then it was somehow stolen. Protest, protest, protest, big time, is what I say.

Rythan,

So if Obama loses, it is automatically assumed to be because someone "stole" the election. It wouldn't be because he actually lost, right? That wouldn't happen, right? Unbelievable, I hope McCain wins just because of people that think foolish crap like this ...
Reply

Jimbednarz,

@rythan It's all being setup unfortunately for a mess. All of the talk about the polls predicting a win for Obama well in advance and the media already talking about the "first days" of an Obama Presidency, cabinet picks, etc. is setting up what could be a nightmare scenario of cries of fraud and racism that I sincerely hope doesn't become violent if McCain wins. If Obama wins in a very tight race and there is ANY argument of impropriety by the Republicans I suspect it will be responded to with incredulous calls of "How dare they make such charges". I hope that either way someone wins with a clear margin of victory to avoid what I fear will be a very troublesome period in our history.

Greetings from Pakistan. The US as a whole can survive any president. Despite the socialist calling from the left, us capitalists know what's up. For those that end up on the losing side, we've instituted a $5 US fine for whining. We do accept all major credit cards. Yeah Capitalism! For the curioius: Yes, I voted absentee ballot for our liberal Republican candidate John McCain.

Also, remember, Kerry was up by double digits the day of the election. Reagan was losing in the polls for almost the whole campaign period. An upset is not out of the question, the most popular one brought up being Dewey beats Truman. If it comes down to Ohio being too close, I would want to protest against the sorry state of Ohio election management. The massive voter registration fraud will give fodder for any controversy in a "stolen" election by either candidate.

@jimbednarz It is all about race ... and that is the unfortunate thing. It should never be about that. It should be about the best person for the job. Of course that hasn't been true for far too long. Time to throw out a lot of shady back room crap and most importantly -- make lobbying illegal. Time to return to "by the people, *for* the people" Not for big business and greedy politicians.

This election is already Tainted, thanks to Acorn. They are already under investigation for Voter Registration Fraud and it's only a small step to Voter Fraud. Only one of the faulty registrations has to vote, that has already been happened, and there is no telling how many others may have slipped through. So I fully expect there to be challenges to the election. Unfortunately there is a segment of this society who are poised and waiting to riot, all they need is an excuse, and they don't care about the election or how it turns out.
If the Left in this country take over and are without restriction as to what they can do, this will no longer be the United States of America as we know it. God bless America, God help this Country.

@Rmarler has a point about the "Right" taking over w/o restriction. As a moderate and pro-divided gov't person, I am scared of a single party Executive and Legislature, especially a filibuster proof congress. We all know what absolute power does. It was too tempting for the GOP and will be for the Dems as well. For all those who loved the Clinton years, remember that a Republican Congress was giving him all those bills to sign.

Let's be fair about this guys and gals. The Republicans were in control for 5.5 of the years of this current administration. They became corrupted and started spending like there was no tomorrow. I happen to be Republican and I am not happy about what they did, but that will stop. However, this current financial situation was not created by the Republicans. This started with FDR, then to LBJ, then to the peanut farmer, then to Bill Clinton. The problem we're having with Wall Street and the economy could have been stopped if the Democrats had not stopped the call for regulation of Fanny and Freddie. That is where this was generated from, Not George Bush. When Bush took over there was a surplus but headed into recession, and then 911 happened so I don't fault him completely for what has transpired. But, the Democrats Pelosi Reed, Franks, and Dodd among others have had 2.5 years and produced Nothing, Nada, Zilch. If they are turned loose with a blank check we are really in trouble. This country has done nothing to be forgiven for, it's some of the people in it, and they will answer to a higher power down the road.

I am so with you on this. If our votes don't truly count, what's the point of voting?

Smart people with very strong biases work in high places where they may be able to tamper with machines, vote boxes, ballots. Will they?

They may justify changing votes for "the greater good." Or, change votes because they they hate a particular candidate. Either one.

A country that does not enforce conscience is a country that will fall. Conscience is the glue that binds us together as a people, a nation. Without it, we have no compass, no trust, no belief.

What to do? The only protection is from us; ourselves. We have to be vigilant. We have to be willing to call our representatives if we see or suspect foul play with our votes. Calling over and over if necessary. Doing what it takes to protect our votes. Our rights.

If we don't, we will lose them. Why? Because, there are people, and always will be people, who will want to take them away. And, some of them are very clever, crafty, dedicated.

These are people who think they know more than we do. Are better than us. Smarter than us. That we are sheep that can be manipulated, used as chattel.

So, it's up to us. Protect your vote! Monitor your voting place! Observe the people, conditions. Find out who handles the voting machines. Demand careful voting oversight!

And, if you suspect fraud, demand review and recount!

@Michaelhansel When has there been a non-violent revolution of a nation?

@wylietx75098 I am unclear on how voter registration fraud can become voter fraud? Do you think Mickey Mouse can vote? Also, there is no ACORN scandal...there is an attempt to create one by a certain set of people that has been largely ignored by everyone else. No one cares about ACORN except people desperately looking for some way to discredit Obama, and those people were going to vote McCain anyway. Keep bringing it up all you want...along with "spread the wealth", "pals around with terrorists" and "birth certificate", because they have about as much credibility as "Obama's the antichrist!"

@thePuck Your analogy is totally inappropriate here. Of course Mickey Mouse or the Offensive line for the Dallas Cowboys are not going to vote, but in past elections the dead have, and felons have, and people representing themselves to be what they know they are not have. That my friend is voter fraud, and it comes from Voter Registration Fraud. In the early 60's when I came back to the World, I got involved with the Young Republicans in Chicago. I got a rude awakening and an in depth education in politics quickly. I was the Republican precinct captain for the ward I was in, Dan Rostenkowski was the Democrat Ward Boss (Remember him, he went to Congress, and I believe was indicted). Dick Daily was the mayor at the time. I know for a fact that they took people to the grocery store and bought them a couple of bags of groceries and on election day they trailed into the polling place like ducks in a row and voted democrat. I know for a fact that the machine went to the southside and gave out what they called Ice Cream money which was a $5 bill in a plain white envelope, and I dare say that practice may still be in force. And, for your information there is an Acorn scandal. They should have their government funding taken away and be disbanded. I'm not the one who gave $800k to a rump organization for Acorn, Obama was, and that's a fact jack. It's public information, look it up. Spread the wealth was Obama's comment not mine, and he's talking about taking income I've worked hard for, and giving it to someone who hasn't, that's called welfare, or a gentler term Hand Out, kinda like Ice Cream money. And, as far as being a pal of terrorists my concern is not so much about the fact he knows these people but what he took away from those relationships as far as ideology. In reference to the birth certificate that will be determined by the courts. Obama is not the antichrist, haven't you heard what a prominent Black Muslim referred to him as, I believe the word was Messiah. What a crock. I'm surprised you didn't bring up the Fannie/Freddy thing.
So I will ... Obama was second in line to Mr. Dodd as far as money received from them, and he is considered to be the 3rd in line as to being the most Liberal, and I personally consider him to be socialistic. Socialism doesn't work history attests to that. I would advise you to go to the library and do some reading as to congressional records, and you might pick up a copy of the book by Karl Marx, you might just learn something.

@wylietx75098 Well, that was a nice long mess of logical fallacies. Good job. Have read Marx, Engels, and the Hegel they descend from...perhaps you need to reread them and see whether what they wrote about has actually ever been tried, much less failed. However, once again, NO ONE CARES except people who already were voting McCain. No one. Not one. I don't think abstractions of economic systems need to be "defended" from other abstractions, nor do I care about how Muslims (or Christians...or witch doctors...) feel. So again...NO ONE who is currently undecided gives two figs about these manufactured scandals. Keep repeating them, keep getting shriller, and all you do is keep making sure that the GOP looks like rabble-rousing, jingoistic, racist morons to the few undecideds left. Just one question...before you "came back to the world", where we you?

@wylietx75098 Wait...I thought you were preventing a "Domino Effect" of Communist dictatorships to strengthen the USSR, creating an eastern communist bloc that would extend the time required for the game theoretical solution commonly referred to as the "Cold War" to overextend the economy of the USSR and lead to its collapse. I wasn't aware that anyone in Vietnam ever wanted to take away any American's right to free speech. In fact, having heard this particular emotional manipulation used to avoid the points raised in an argument before, I looked this up once and found that not once has any military force attacked the United States with the declared objective of silencing free speech or take away anyone's right to march in the streets. Perhaps, since you are so well-informed on what is and is not public information you can point me to the information on this Vietnamese attack on American free speech?

But I'm sure it makes it easier for you to discount the ongoing rebuttal of each of your points if you consider me a hippie, so please, feel free. The American people has long been oppressed by the media, by propaganda forced to believe you were in the center of the universe. Now at least half of the Americans starts to think like the rest of the world. Wherever I look I find a whole new flow of progressiveness in the American mind and that my friends was hard to find not too long ago, at least not as it is happening now. And this will for a change does not come from the right. You may argue all you want about my words or among yourselves or this article but the fact is that the world had an opinion about you and that opinion is constantly degrading itself towards unsuspected levels and that you owe to the Republican party and Mr. Bush. If you still want to vote for a neocon and his pathetic wife, man, all the world should be in mourning and turn their backs on you. It would be quite unfair with Obama voters but I am sure this is how everyone outside the US feels right now. As someone says here, rather than dressing in black you should go and do something about it. If someone beats you up, spits on your face, send your kids to war, gets rich out your pockets and then laughs on your face, what do you do? I just want to think there is going to be justice and there will be no big scale manipulation of the elections and finally Obama wins. I know your hands will be tied up and probably you won't be able to do much, but it is not lost yet so do all you can to avoid it. Believe it or not we also depend on your vote so we too care. From Europe, all of our support to you people. Vote!

Obama has quite a full plate to come. Just as Kennedy was tested by Russia during the Cuban missle crisis I fear they will try to test Obama also. Russia is now in talks with Chavez and Castro (his brother) regarding upgrading their arms to the nuclear level. I have been a libertarian in the past elections just to keep democrats and republicans off my back. Now I feel like a vote for Bob Barr would be spitting in the wind. I would have voted for Mccain if Pailan had not fell for that phone prank. I feel sorry for her naivete in not knowing what was going on. Today she scares me. Really scares me if she were to become President. Need more time. Much more time.

What exactly defines a stolen election? Just because your candidate loses (regardless of party) doesn't mean that anyone stole anything. I do think though that we are in for some problems. Too few manned voting booths. Voting machine problems. Too few printed ballots at polling stations. The next few days are likely to be a bumpy ride and I'm betting that the courts are going to get involved.

Seansharp,

Guess I'll chime back in here since I made a comment about the election being stolen. Here's my take (for what it's worth): voting trends in the recent past have been towards the Democratic candidate. In 2000 540,000 more people wanted Gore to be the president. In 2004 if 60,000 people had voted differently in Ohio, Kerry would have been president. Some say (see Rolling Stone for some articles) that because polling machines were moved and lines were long, many people gave up on voting (in Ohio anyways). Did this really happen? I don't know. Is it possible? I think it is. OK next, for me, in looking at polling sites such as Real Clear Politics or fivethirtyeight.com I see how much Obama is ahead in many states. Then I compare that to the percentage that Bush won in those states four years ago and I just don't see how McCain will make up the difference and win in those swing states. To me the only way this could happen is if people have lied to pollsters (and there are a lot of polls out there this time), many Obama supporters don't show up to vote, or electronic voting machines are rigged to switch votes every so often (where's a paper trail on these things anyways?). So, to me it looks like Obama will win the Electoral College fairly easily based on the state polls. My original comment was, I'll admit, made in haste, and perhaps was unfair, but at the same time, when things don't add up and continue to not add up based on the data that is present, then something is fishy to me. Just my $.02. Thanks for reading . . . . .

Jmalmberg,

There is a lot more that people don't know about this election than they do know, so insinuating that anything other than an Obama win would mean a stolen election is a real stretch.

First, pollsters have changed the definition of a likely voter this year by bringing the age range down. They don't know if they are right and there are actually some polls that indicate that they are not (yes, the pollsters are polling their own assumptions). If you go back to the old age range, the election results tighten considerably.

Second, we should have learned in the 2000 election that trusting any polling data is risky at best. The networks called Florida for Bush and then had to put it back into the toss-up category.

Third, depending on which data you look at, there may be as much as 17% of the electorate that is still undecided. Once you start to calculate those people into the mix, there is no way to know how this is going to break.

Finally, the comment about this being a recent phenomenon is incorrect. You can go back through history of elections and you will find the same types of things. For instance, in the 1960 election, less than 20,000 votes spread across several states were enough to swing the election to Kennedy, and that is only one example. A lot of people thought that that election was stolen too.

I have to agree with @Neofile. The election is only stolen if the candidate of your choice loses? Kind of a childish sentiment if you ask me. Articles like this do nothing but divide our country not unite it. Also, let's not forget that the true election of our president is done by the electoral college NOT by popular vote. As long as BOTH sides have committed to fair play and obey the constitution as it was written we cannot argue about the outcome.

That said, and badly, I'm sure, I'm happy that 50% of folks disliked this share.

@homosuperior That would be because when you dislike something, it gets clipped too, argh. And ... what ... is ... wrong ... with ... ellipses?

@jasongoldberg When you DISlike something, it gets clipped?

@homosuperior yes. Clipping a story is just intended to tell other people it's worth checking out. It doesn't express an opinion. When you do any other activity (e.g. like, dislike, comment, share), we clip it for you, as you have indicated that there's something about this story that you have taken action on and thus others would benefit from taking a look at.

@jasongoldberg So, we're expressing intensity, interest, focus. Makes sense. I guess should not have commented on something I thought was was mostly worthless.

I don't know how anyone can compare Acorn's stupidity with the voter purging and shady anti-democratic activity by sitting Republicans in key states. http://www.socialmedian.com/story/1515817/t-r-u-h-o-how-mccain-could-winplease-pay-attention

Why is the election only "stolen" if McCain wins? Why are you calling only Obama supporters into action, and not all Americans? If an election is stolen, one way or the other, all Americans should rise up in protest, and not just by wearing black clothes.

There will be nasty repercussions. I was online at 5:30 am, but there were reports of people lining up since last night in districts that have almost NO registered Republicans to speak of (New York polls open at 6:00am). The line in my district went around the block three times! Almost everyone seemed to be there to vote for Barack Obama. This isn't an election that can easily be stolen. The fervor this year is solidly for Obama. Any discrepancy in the votes would have to be decided in his favor, or there very well might be trouble.

@soundstripe Because we don't trust the GOP. Both of the last elections looked shady, and that shady was obviously in the GOP's favor and obviously required some pretty highly-placed people to make it happen (if it did, in fact, happen, which I do not have enough evidence to commit to one way or the other). Hence, when all of the predictive technology says Obama should win by a landslide and McCain somehow wins, then those of us (like me) who were once willing to give the system the benefit of the doubt will stop. I, for one, will be certain the coup of the democracy of the United States was actually achieved years ago, and that we are slipping further under the control of the ultra-rich elite (using religion, ignorance, and the fear of other to move the masses, of course) just slowly enough to not react en masse.
