One of the things I've always admired about Senator Obama is his almost instinctual pragmatism. Although the right has endlessly tried to paint him as some sort of radical, he's demonstrated time after time throughout his career that he's less of an ideological, knee-jerk ideologue than he is a pragmatic, bipartisan problem-solver. In his interview last night with ABC's Charlie Gibson, Senator Obama spoke about his post-election pre-planning and what the makeup of an Obama cabinet might look like.
Obama told ABC News' Charlie Gibson that he didn't have a list of people he wanted to bring into the government but said "I've got some pretty good ideas about the senior Cabinet of government officials that I think could perform very well for the country. ... I have a good idea of who the candidates would be."
Obama said he would reach across the aisle on a range of issues, from energy independence to health care to education.
"On a whole host of these issues, I think we need Republicans, not just as show pieces," Obama told Gib
I've predicted this before, but Dick Lugar might be in there somewhere. I'd love to be proved right. Lugar is a sane, reasonable, smart as hell Republican with a ton of foreign policy experience. Went head to head with Bush on a number of occasions.
Rick, you're pushing Dick Lugar pretty hard today. If Obama wins, and I wouldn't be happy about that, then sure let's put a Republican in the Sec. State spot. Lets Mitch Daniels put a solid conservative in the Senate. Todd Rokita? Becky Skillman?
Obama has lied before. This is typical of him, telling people what he needs them to hear so they will vote for him. A bipartisan cabinet is the last thing on Obama's agenda. (Maybe with the exception of Reps that sold out...and I bet they will change party anyway)
@cabradio Could you please enlighten us with a specific example of these "typical lies" of Obama? I have watched over the past two years as Republicans and Democrats have united to take responsibility for our nation by working together. It is snide partisan remarks like this one that polarize- do you really think that's going to make some sort of difference beyond vetting anger and dissent? If you are going to make such brazen remarks about Senator Obama's agenda, perhaps you could site something more specific instead of attacking cooperative citizens willing to look beyond the labels of party lines as "sell outs." These are citizens who have devoted their lives to serving their country day in and out to make it better for all of us. If you are so appalled by the way they're running things, maybe you should go into public service yourself (though you will have to work with people with differing perspectives than yourself- who knows, you might even learn something).
@sarahcrisman If as "cooperative citizens" you haven't already done the research, or you aren't acknowledging the facts, then you already admit that you don't care enough about the truth.
@homosuperior I am not an investigative reporter. So, we would be discussing opinion of the facts at this point. It is clear that everyone's opinions have been made, so the argument would strictly be academic. The proof will be in the pudding. Welcome to the WSA, that is, the Welfare States of America.
