Think you know what you’re doing every time you engage in social media? Neither do I, and neither do the social media gurus I spoke to about their biggest social networking blunders. In an effort to learn from others’ mistakes, here’s a list of some all-star errors in judgment from some social media all stars. I’ll lead off the order by admitting an error of my own.
Excellent article. As a consumer looking at brands engaging in social media, I couldn't agree more! As a marketer, these are great tips I will take into consideration when developing social media campaigns for my clients. Thanks!
My biggest social media mistake? Like others, sometimes I write (say) things I regret after the fact. The web is SOOO permanent now. Be careful with your brand! Once you post it, it's there for eternity!
@A_F I think the biggest mistake I make, is not given myself enough time, when I comment. Hopefully I have learned my lesson. I found that when I leave a comment in haste, I seldom communicate what I truly mean. Spelling and grammar can always be a problem, even when I'm trying to be careful. But, it’s always compounded when I rush. I've also found that when I slow down, I have a much better time. I've always been very conscious of what I say online, because I've known it could come back to me. It's something I try to stay aware of and, at the same time I would never let it restrict my ability to share my thoughts or feelings. I have to admit that when I Goggled my name, I was a little shocked to see every comment ever made come up. None of us really know what we will be doing in the future. Therefore, being conscious of our comments is something worth keeping in the back our minds. I took my time on this comment, and I hope I didn't make any mistakes.
@michaelfidler @A_F great point. When I'm inspired to leave a comment, I tend to get really wound up and rush to post. It's silly, and counterproductive. Especially with tools like Backtype tracking our comments- super useful for searches, but will likely have that yearbook "I can't believe I said that" slap when I look back at the comments that could have used more thought. In my rush to want to jump in on the conversation, I have more than once typed my foot right into my mouth.
@sarahcrisman I appreciate your honesty too. When I wrote my comment I had no idea that this article would get so popular. I think it would be funny to have a post, where everybody can reveal the most embarrassing thing they did online. What do you think!
