Which of the following do you want to see us do first? Or, something else entirely? (A) Clean up the UI. (B) More/better filters and views. (C) Search. (D). News alerts on any topic. (E). Mobile apps for blackberry, iphone, android, (F) Blog widgets for you blog, (G) integrate more sites like Mixx, NowPublic, etc. (H) Submit images & video directly onto socialmedian. (I) SMS/text to socialmedian from mobile. (J) something else entirely?
A. clean up the UI, mainly because you are getting some Facebook users who are not quite as savvy as the other early adopters that are here. I am thinking some simplification as well, especially in the filters/noise/source relevance area.
My unsolicited $.02: (A) It's all about the UI, could use a tidying up and simplifying. (E + I) Mobile features are hot for established folks, not necessarily new users. (D) News alerts sound interesting, but I'm not sure that wouldn't cloud up the feature line. Are you thinking e-mail? Mobile alerts? Tweets? My creativity is tapped, otherwise I'd add something completely off-the-wall to (J).
Hi there. F) Widgets - so that we can include SocialMedian content in Retaggr, closely followed by B) - while SM does bring me quality content right now, theres a concern that with more and more users there will be more noise.
I agree with @robdiana, the site should be easier to use. It would be a shame have a new user get frustrated and not come back after one or two visits!
J. An API that 3 parties can use! I am thinking basic user search as well as a story search by URL. The story should contain a link to the original source, who submitted it, number of clips and who clipped it, number of likes/dislikes and who did that, and the comments.
@jasongoldberg Here's one you highly should consider. You could start with a standard podcast, and move to video when you see the payoff. It could be similar to Diggnation, but you won't be drinking beer sitting on a couch too close to your buddy. Rather, you could have featured bloggers, and Newsmakers as guests. Maybe even the original writer, if they are different then the person who submitted the article. It could be once a week covering the best or most clipped stories. It's informative, great PR, and will reach a larger audience. Did I mention it could also be profitable. And, it doesn't matter if people are in different states, or countries. Leo Laporte uses Skype to connect remote guests every week, and it works great. You should start with audio for now. If it proves to be viable, you could add video in time to launch the site coming out beta! Just an idea.
What does everyone think of being able to change the colors / layout of your public socialmedian page, even put it at your own url? sort of like really having your own version of the drudge report?
1) Flawless Firefox 3 support! :-) 2) Keep the box on the upper-right always at the same height, even if I hover over the tab buttons Snip, News and Site. The sudden up-and-down movements of the item groups below it are distracting.
@jasongoldberg changing the layout might be a nice idea, but I think it is a "nice to have". Because I can create my own network, I am not sure what benefit a custom url would have, unless you are an openID provider.
@jasongoldberg Does "all of the above" not work ? :) I would vote (in order) 1 - Search 2 - Mobile app or mobile site (please include WM, not just iPhone :) ) 3 - News Alerts 4 - More filters/views 5 - Publish an API
@jasongoldberg Since you love my idea, I'll throw out something I came across this morning. Revision 3 is looking to expand their lineup. They are holding an open submission to find ideas for a new show. I don't think you would need to go through that process. If your worried about cost, they have some of the best facilities, great ad model, and Bitgravity as their CDN(the best in my opinion). I think they would like the idea, because it would reach a different demographic then their other content. Even Kevin Rose has matured beyond the show he created. It would simplify things, on the production side, while introducing a huge audience to the show and the site. Leo Laporte is another, and perhaps better choice. I noticed he clipped some articles today. Sound like a little more than a research expedition, plus he's the real deal.So hit the phones!
@robdiana I've noticed a couple of people here have blogs that just copy the content of their network. If they had there own url that would be unessescary. Especially if you allow networks to have advertising, with a revenue split, course. The blogs I saw all have ads. Same content, different place. And @jeffdoug, has a great priority list. Search is really important. I couldn't find an article from last week that I wanted to reference today. One final thing, you mentioned that replize would be enhanced with more features. What happened with that?
@jasongoldberg You've made huge strides with functionality. In some ways that just gets us all wanting more. I've asked for search and continue to think it would be a nice add on (i'd like A - F + the API). If you pressed be for one, its UI.
I'd love to be able to hide a story (this one for example). It seems disingenuous to me that the "top story" from my sources is a Social Median story... and I'd like to move on.
@jasongoldberg It's not a bad idea to be able to hide our own material. Filters are great, but what if a picture from Flickr comes in that wan't really intended for here. we could delete them, or hide them.
@jasongoldberg I'd like to be able to search sources by who added them to S|M. If you are following someone, I think it be nice to see some of their sources.
@jasongoldberg I'd like to be able to preference My News Networks for my home page and have my email alerts match it. Maybe on My News Networks page add a control to move a network up or down (I know I can turn off the network in email alerts).
@mott nice suggestion on the favorite news networks. We've got a design for that -- may push it to the front of the line as you are about the 10th person to ask for that in the past couple of weeks.
@jasongoldberg Its probably wrapped up in a bunch of things on your todo list for A), but please be sure to translate \r\n in comments to br html tags.
I have a small suggestion, but I would really like to know if I'm already following someone who adds me as a newsmaker (not unlike the emails sent by Twitter when someone you're following follows you back).
BIt slow on the uptake here, but read through all the above and all are positive comments. One thing I know I have repeatedly wanted which goes in line with what @DanielJPritchett is mobile phone support. I find myself out walking the dog, with the iPhone, browsing new feeds, finding new sites and posts that I would just love to be able to submit, but does not seem possible.
That would be really very useful to me.
@Crow74 also touches on FF3 issues on the mac, just slight issues, nothing major, but all helps create a more streamlined process.
To be able to add more than one NewsGroup when 'sharing' at a time rather than having to keep going back a step.
@jasongoldberg I'm glad @imjustcreative mention that, because I thought I was the only asking for some type of modification on this. Honestly, I know it has no relevance for most users, but have a short time it might. It's such a little thing, that perhaps another web designer could suggest a simple fix that would not interfere with more important projects.
@imjustcreative @michaelfidler great stuff both of you, thanks. We're listening and absorbing it all. We've got a hectic roadmap next couple of weeks already mapped out, with UI cleanups, filters, and first big steps on search. Much more to follow.
@jasongoldberg, Go for A. The other day I was trying show a friend this site. I used his computer, which ran Firefox with NoScript. Unfortunately I typed my password in the password field in the header which due to the missing javascripts was displayed it in clear text. Anyways, I should had allowed socialmedian in the first place, but I forgot it since it was not my computer.
Hi everyone. We'll have some new stuff for our "power users" to take a look at by end of next week (around October 24th). We'll most likely put it on a new url and then ask for you to play with it and take a short survey on it. Please reply if you would like to be included. Will be first steps on some UI improvements, filters, and search to start.
FYI. We're also working this week and next on: (1) Fixes to improve how stories are auto-shared into news networks, to make that more logical and proper. (2) Enhancements to replize, particularly auto-complete for your socialmedian followers/newsmakers. (3) more/better on share on facebook options, and options for how your info is auto-shared on facebook, and (4) many bug fixes. This stuff will just go live on the site. Please make sure to reply to my comment above if you want to be included in the test of new features around October 24th.
I'd just like it to be easier to login on my iPhone and Nokia N810. When the login 'window' pops up, the controls are on the lower right, and it's difficult, especially on the Nokia, to get to the login link.
I hope this doesn't sound petty, but I would love to see some attention given to (changing!) the dreadful mood icons/style. The mood meter idea is great, however the graphics/colors look junky and amateurish compared to the rest of the site. I really like social|median and I think a more polished look (which I think it was before the mood meter) would reflect more accurately what a great service it is.
@jasongoldberg Yes, less cutesy, but also better graphic quality. Maybe it's just my monitor. ;-) I know it's a small thing, but it really jumps out at me... maybe others, too? Or maybe not. :-)
@jasongoldberg I agree with @geekmum the color choice and look could be improved. Low priority Just talking about appearance, the features great. I would consider the overall aesthics of the site.
@jasongoldberg:: I would love to have a network widget. I'm using S|M in my PR strategy to enable discussion between analysts, clients, and influentials, it would be right nifty to have something to embed on our site that shows recent network stories and discussions (would be a handy traffic driver for both of us).
A bit rushed so, don't know if someone has already said it but, for me, I'd welcome being alerted to topics/news/people/newsmakers I've chosen to follow. Not just an email alert but, rather, a little pop up such as are available though widgets. That type of thing would probably bring more interaction with the Social Median site...I know I'd want to come read full stories if alerted to them via a compact little widget bringing interesting news to my attention... (Forgive me if that's about as clear as mud - it's 2 am! :-) )
I think the top ideas is good as it is similar to youtube where you see an original version.. I think if you see copies that is ok too as some people have their own friends, contacts and watch what they have to share, especially seeing how you have the follow me tool. Also I think that it would be good to have links with new stories and updates and not copies as it can sometimes look a little on the stale side.. It would be great if you can have a good search parameter like google where say... I enjoy military due to husband being military officer so I would like to see links to military where there is any new update whether being headlines, connections to youtube to view clips and see their video links or to see news story links to military jobs... I think if the search parameters are out there and gets all links in one when you list as a favorite you will cover a great deal of ground and people can open what they like from within that where it will pop up on either through this site or to a different window.. Hope this helps.
1) A way of somehow unmarking articles that get dumped into the wrong networks. Obama items get dropped into climate change, socialmedian articles get dropped into apple.
2) A way of marking and article as "Not Interested" so it is hidden from my feed.
