Summary

Over the last few months there has been increasing discussion of how micro-blogging tools such as Twitter could be used in organizations.

Twitter is now frequently used in external communication, with organizations as diverse as @SouthwestAir, @Comcastcares, @BigPondTeam, @SEC_Investor_Ed, and @mosmancouncil using Twitter to communicate to stakeholders and for customer service. Given the rapid rise of Twitter and how influential comments can be, this clearly needs to be on the radar for any major organization.

However there are significant constraints in using public micro-blogging services such as Twitter, Jaiku, or identi.ca for internal communication. Even with the ability to protect people’s updates to being viewed only by approved followers, few organizations would like to have this kind of information hosted externally.

As such they often look at internal tools to see how yet another consumer technology can be adapted to create value for the enterprise.

It's funny that people are just copying twitter thing and using it on corporate level to make some money out of it. What is twitter doing? How do they intend to make money in future?

I've been using Yammer for awhile, nobody else at work has gotten into it, so I'm shouting in an empty auditorium. Curiously, it seems the similar service ididwork.com might have more functionality, but hasn't benefited from Yammer's (possibly unwarranted) publicity. Anyone trying ididwork.com?

I work with large companies to implement social media programs. While many are cautious while getting into the game, there is an overall curiosity about the space. Getting them to understand that social media is an experiment and that Twitter is one of the best experiments of them all gives them the perspective they need to understand that it's ok to experiment. More companies are coming to Twitter because of the low barrier to entry of the medium. And, many are starting to see the benefits.

@scbalazs ididwork is built on a different principle. It follows the microblogging structure, but is really a project or task management tool, not necessarily a tool for communicating.

As for everyone copying what Twitter started, that's just about as crazy as saying WordPress copied TypePad or Chevy copied Ford. Technically they did, because someone had to come up with the idea first, but subsequent similar products are not copies, they are competitors trying to further product along.

@miketempleton I see your point on the difference, but then I'm not sure from a corporate standpoint what the utility of Yammer is. Is it to replace internal IM? My first impression of Yammer is, great, people can share what they're working on, project status, etc., but I'd love for it to have more tracking features.

@scbalazs You nailed it exactly. I think the point of Yammer is a more-refined IM. Though not instantaneous like IM, it does make messages available to everyone, hopefully allowing them to benefit from your discussions. It also has tracking ability via hashtags, the staff directory and access to the network from multiple sources: email, IM, mobile and a desktop client.

@scbalazs i agree. there's too many of the same thing on the web due to low barrier of entry. however, there isn't a unique selling point in some of these "copy" sites. i wouldn't want to have several accounts over the same thing like for eg. social networking sites. its such a hassle to update every account.

@zahhh The real key in my opinion is finding the best sites and helping them emerge as the leaders. Just like there are hundreds of social networking sites, Facebook and MySpace have risen to the top. I think over time there will be some microblogging sites that rise to the top (like Twitter) and others that will just fade away.

@miketempleton ok can you tell me the great attraction of twitter? apparently, the network effect hasn't start in my country, and may take 2 years like facebook did to become popular here. other than using it for business, i see most americans using it to just to hourly blogged about things. over here, texting over the phone is huge because its free. i feel twitter is just like texting friends over here, hence can't see it grow internationally.

@zahhh The company that started Twitter though it was just going to be about texting friends constantly over a new platform, but what's happened is that more people are actually using it on the web instead. I do communicate and have conversations on Twitter, but I also use it to share links to articles I am reading or find interesting, which my friends do as well, which makes Twitter a great resource for not only what your friends are doing but also what is going on in the world.

@miketempleton true, i draw my resources from the people i'm following on twitter. i guess we're still a step behind from the way americans are using their internet, you guys are already moving to knowledge sharing online but we're still doing one way communication with the internet.

@zahhh On the site that I write for, http://microblink.com, we are covering all of the different ways people are using microblogging tools, whether it be to post information about themselves or to share resources. Feel free to check it out.
