Summary
The hands-down lamest excuse of Americans attempting to deny accusations of prejudice has long been: "But, some of my best friends are (African-American/Latino/gay/fill-in-the-blank)."

In the flurry of news stories that first started coming out about Sarah Palin following John McCain's choice of her as his running mate, it was repeated several times that Palin had a lot of gay friends. Book banner, creationism advocate, global warming denier, foe of gay marriage, fan of forced childbirth for 12-year old rape victims -- hey, Palin may be all those things, but don't you for a minute believe that our Sarah is a religious extremist and a narrow-minded bigot. Why -- she has gay friends! The tidbit about the gay friends seems to have been put out there to make Sarah seem not only "tolerant" but also kinda cool -- as if her friends' gay fabulousness would rub off on her somehow. Hillarious. Obama and Biden don't support gay marriage either, but you're silent about that. Palin doesn't support denying abortions to 12 year old rape victims either.

You guys are a bunch of fools and hypocrites. Palin believes in god, so she's a religious extremist. But you're silent about Jeramiah Wright - Oabama's US OF KKKA Preacher of 20 years - is utterly hypocritical, now THAT is religious extremism.

well, I actually listened to what jeremiah wright had to say he made a lot of sense...when he was quoted out context, yes it was extreme...you seem to want to attack me...where did I say I supported obama and biden?...to me, they are both corrupt hacks...obama for change?...that's so laughable it makes me want to cry...he's only gotten 22 million from wall street this year...biden...they don't call him Senator Mastercard for nothing...but I would take both those gentlemen over McCain/Palin any day of the week...Palin increased the budged ot Alaska by 60%...she left Wassilia in debth...she did not sell the plane on ebay...so I'm glad you're not a fool or hypocrite...way to go!!!!

@zote63 I think that Obama & Biden's position of in favor of domestic partner benefits but against gay marriage is positive, safe, but lame. Obama speaks of being proud to be above political expediency but this is a case where I'm certain he's taken a position that he thinks he needs in order to get elected vs. what he thinks/knows is rig

For the record, I support Ralph Nader and one reason why I do so is that I got sick and tired of Democrats taking safe positions in order to get elected...they haven't ended the war...they caved on the bailout...and frankly, Obama's and Biden's positon on gay rights is disgusting...how dare they deny someone full rights and expression...

Zote, you just made my case for me thank you. When you said "I actually listened to Jeramiah Wright and he made sense to me."

I wish people like you would give the same benefit of the doubt to prominent Republicans when they "speak out of context" that you give to anti-american nut jobs like Jeramiah Wright.

The reason why there has been little outrage (and mainstream media coverage) from the left about Jeramiah is because they mostly agree with him, er, I mean, he makes sense to them.

Thank you for confirming that.

PS - Sarah never said she sold the plane on e-bay, she said she "put it on eBay" - it actually sold later in a private sale. But why let the truth get in the way of a good line to knock Palin?

@jasongoldberg - The thing about gay marriage is that whenever its been put to a vote (and not forced by the judiciary) the general public has voted overwhelmingly against gay marriage. Its just not an issue any of the mainstream candidates are going to latch on to. The mainstream candidates (and most Americans) are OK with civil unions, but they feel very strongly about the word marriage as being specifically applied to one man and one woman. They don't like it when a judge overrules the will of the people and forces gay marriage upon the populace.

No one forcing gay marriage on anyone...look at the divorce rate...that's some sanctity of marriage..

Lets see, in California judges overruled the will of the people who voted down a gay marriage amendment (in California, which is a liberal paradise), I'd call that judicial activism and a progressive set of values being forced on a population that clearly said it didn't want it.

The divorce rate is a red herring. Nice try dog gone it :-), but it misses the point.

@zote63 @thekookfringe.com do you realize that the two of you have completely managed to show the real problem with american politics in just a few comments?

Factionalism is the biggest problem we have, it's not one party or another, one person or another, it's the we're right, you're wrong mentality that people on both sides of the aisle have that keep us separated.

Obama/Biden are not perfect, neither are McCain/Palin (and for that matter neither is Nader, Barr, McKinney, etc...) Neither party is the answer to the problems we face, because both want to keep things exactly as they are. The party system has been the biggest problem in our democracy from the beginning (read Washington's farewell address), factionalism is driving us farther apart, and both parties use wedge issues like abortion, gay marriage, etc... to continue the cycle.

@greghollingsworth ask yourself why is there always a debate in st. louis...when you found out the answer then talk to me...I am not for either obama or mcCain...I am also not for denying a human being their rights...you tell me how homosexuality threatens anyone and then I am might listen...war on iraq...war on drugs...prison complex...military industrial complex...and you say I am being right?...

@zote63 you're missing my point. I don't think homosexuality threatens anyone (as my many gay friends would certainly reinforce for you :)) I also think the war on drugs (which is the root cause of the prison complex) is a huge mistake.

I wasn't weighing judgment on either yours or @TheKookFringe.com's points, simply pointing out that factionalism (and the us v. them mentality that comes along with it) is the largest hurdle we face as a nation. Our political system will not change until the us v.them mentality becomes a "we mentality".

@zote63 and I think your knee-jerk reaction to my comment (which made no mention of any of the issues you were discussg with @thekookfringe) is a perfect example of what I was talking about.

@greghollingsworth those are good points...I had actually written a better response but I wasn't logged in so I lost it and I wanted to response promptly so it was more off the cuff..I agree with you factionalism is keeping us apart...

@greghollingsworth and you were right...it was knee jerk...a little too emotional...I just get riled up as I guess the other side does...I am willing to listen...but you know, when they start making whole segments of the population wrong it does make me emotional...

@greghollingsworth all I am saying is that they talk about the sanctity of marriage and yet the divorce rate is so high...sarah palin has a kid who is knocked up out of wedlock...

@zote63 i understand, that second post is never as good as the first one. We all get emotional from time to time, especially when politics are involved.

But, generally speaking, responding to irrational emotion with more irrational emotion never results in anything positive. Don't let them bait you, or don't take the bait.

@zote63 I understand your point. High divorce rates certainly lend less weight to a "sanctity of marriage" argument. And I don't think Bristol Palin's pregnancy has anything to do with anything (she should be left alone, it's bad enough that she's already been turned into an issue).

The best way to argue your own point is to do just that, discredit their argument with facts and logic. Resorting to hurling epithets never gets anybody anywhere.
