At the 140 Twitter Conference yesterday, Alex Payne, Twitter's API lead told Robert Scoble that Twitter might soon add location-based information to every tweet. Currently, users can set a location on their profile, but individual tweets are not geo-coded in any way. If Twitter did indeed add a geo-references to every tweet (Read More)

In a recession, budgets are tightened, jobs are cut, and those who remain are expected to do more with less. Given this type of economic reality, it's surprising to hear of an industry reporting an increase in spending on anything, much less on something as new as social media. Yet that's exactly what's occurring. According (Read More)
: interesting but not really clear who the survey group was. >250 employees could mean 250-100,000. a $100k budget for a fortune 500 company to spend on social media is nothing.
: "According to a new Forrester Research survey of 145 global interactive marketers in both B2B and B2C companies with more than 250 employees, the use of social media as a marketing tool is on the rise. What's more, Forrester reports that over 50% of marketers said they will be increasing their spending on social media marketing in the coming months."

My friend Tom thinks I should create a how-to product on “writing for the paralyzed and confused.” He’s a very creative and articulate guy, but writing kills him. Knocking out two pages can take him hours. And when he’s done, he second-guesses himself for a couple more hours about whether it’s any good. (Read More)

Web 2.0 Expo is under way in New York this week for the first time in the conference history. There were lots of interesting ideas discussed during sessions yesterday with some of the sessions containing facts about social media that seem to be neglected or overlooked way too often. So I have decided to summarize a few of t (Read More)
: The writer makes two important points about social web design: communities find web 2.0 applications, not the other way around, even if we are only talking of communities of shared interest. The second point is search engines, and in particular Google, still drive traffic, no matter how much effort is invested in marketing gimmicks. And the explanation for that, I believe, also accounts for the instinctive reciprocality of friend requests. No matter how much the web presents a rationally organised world, people still prefer am instinct-based mode of operating. Nobody uses Google to search systematically - it is not designed for that. Google provides a bite-sized stimulus and the instinctive response is to click the most attractive looking link. Reciprocating others, seeking a sense of community and link hopping are not cerebral achievements but conditioned reflexes. And I am glad to know that because it means we are not inadvertently being hoovered into a global cybernaut to leave behind what makes us human, our social instincts.

Do business and socializing mix?Apparently so. As the number of business users of social networks continues to increase, advertising expenditures will rise, too. When comparing social media traffic to other forms of traffic, such as search engine, the numbers typically are going to look rather bleak.
