Some say you should never show weakness–but I disagree. Part of what makes me good at what I do is that I have made mistakes before and I’ve learned from them. As well I *still* make mistakes and still learn from them. And I’d love for you to learn from some of my mistakes as [...]. (Read More)

Although the term was thrown around a lot at this year’s GTEC, Tim O’Reilly was the only one who thoroughly—and inspiringly—defined what it meant.
Given that I don’t work in IT, or in the government, I felt a little like a fly on the wall at this conference (that brings together leading experts from all [...]. (Read More)

It’s back to school time! And if you’re like me, even if it’s been a number of years since you were in school, you still get that nostalgic and a little terrified feeling at this time.
Whether you’re back in school or not at all, September is a great time to brush up skills and learn [...]. (Read More)

Our parents and teachers spend a lot of time and energy enforcing good values on us. The most memorable–and important–is the golden rule:” Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”Makes a lot of sense, right? Then why is it often lost in the business world? In my general observation and experiences, most [...] (Read More)

If you are a member of the Ottawa Social Media Book Club group on Meetup, then you would have received an email today saying that I have left the group as an organizer and that it will shut down in 30 days. First of all, neither I (and Scott) or the Social Media Book Club [...]. (Read More)

A couple years ago, I realized the importance of being “Google-able.” I spent a lot of time commenting on blogs, starting up this blog, building up my profiles in various social networks and developing my online portfolio. I was pretty excited when I dominated the first page of results for my name.
I admit, it was [...]. (Read More)

So I realize it’s only Monday, but I got a beef with #FollowFriday, and time to write about it so here goes.
If you don’t know #FollowFriday is a popular Twitter meme started by user @Micah who suggested everyone recommend someone to follow on Friday. A great idea. In theory-you trust who you follow already so [...]. (Read More)

The New York Times has an excellent feature on how a new crop of companies scamming consumers. I bet any company who’s fallen into the latter wishes they *had* been proactive…I’m getting at companies that learn hard lessons from social media: take United Airlines–learning right now. If it was Michael Jackson or Farrah Fawcett then yes…
As tragic as today was because the world lost both a TV icon and a pop superstar, it’s a testament to how much people *really* trust social media tools. If you were following along on Twitter, you may have also heard that Jeff Goldblum, Harrison Ford [...]. (Read More)

I’m very thrilled that we’ll be discussing the Cluetrain Manifesto at Social Media Book Club today. There is one theme that’s presented in the book (which was written in 1999/2000) that I find is still largely ignored. That is the concept of social media changing your business–i.e. it should affect every department, becaus (Read More)
