Eight Ways to Get Users to Fill Out Their Profiles
Aug 02, 2008

ReadWriteWeb "Hi, my name is MrCucumber69, I have a gray blob for a face and that's all I care to share about myself - will you be my friend?" Silly as that sounds, this is the way users of many social web applications great each other. It's not very useful or inspiring. Communication is a lot more useful when you have a good idea who (Read More)

: I really like social|median so far. I'd participate a whole lot more, if I didn't have to earn some money during the day as well!

I've got this cute little avatar that a friend made me in his spare time a few years ago, and I tend to use that across the networks. It's a reasonable likeness. I've no issue with folks knowing basic stuff about me anyway.

Is Google changing how our brains physically work?
Aug 01, 2008

Googling Google It’s not hard to see that there are people addicted to Google — in fact, my first blog’s name was Google Addiction, and it didn’t take long for it to take off. In fact, only three months passed before ZDNet snapped it up and named it “Googling Google”.Since then, this blog has become a [ (Read More)

: It has always been part of the 'human condition' to seek knowledge and convert it into tangible benefits - that is what makes us great learners, thinkers and tool users.

Though the business motives of 'Google' are far more practical 'advertising revenue' - the side effect of pulling the global knowledge base strings ever tighter and serving the right info at the right time to us as consumers has got to be a great thing.

It has also been part of this condition to seek to grow community with those who like us share similar ideals, visions and behaviours.

For that reason - surely google, wikipedia and the tide of social media start-ups have a lot in common in that by tapping into these basic human needs they are leveraging benefits that underly common desires all of us have - satisfying our deepest emotional cravings.

: Are our lives becoming too dependent on Google? Do we actually need to know or remember anything anymore, or is Google becoming our brain?

You should follow me because you want to, not because you're reading this message and feeling a sudden feeling of guilt. Heck, if you don't follow me, I won't hate you or anything, but I mean, all you have to do is click a little follow button and you're done. It's not like you have to do a whole lot of work to follow me or anything. NO PRESSURE!! Seriously, just take your time, and do it only if you want to. ... ....... *cough*

The Talk About Rules for Social Following Is Getting Out of Hand
Jul 21, 2008

louisgray.com As the world of online "friends" is getting increasingly blurred, and many of us are joining social network after social network, expanding our realm of friends to mean much more than just those we know in real life, artificial rules of etiquette are being created for when you follow someone or add them as a friend, and whe (Read More)

: Unfortunately the benchmarks for 'rules' are all real life based.. Agree that each community will make its own rules as they go along, and break them too :)
